Most rain chains look alike in photos. The differences show up after they're hanging — here's what to check before you order, from anyone.
Whether you're replacing one downspout or every downspout on the house, you're probably buying from a product photo. Sellers know that. A handful of specs and claims separate a chain that looks better every year from one you'll be replacing — and they're easy to check once you know where to look.
"Copper" doesn't always mean copper
Many of the copper rain chains sold online aren't 100% copper — they're copper-coated over a cheaper base metal. The difference isn't cosmetic trivia. Pure copper weathers into the deep natural patina that makes these chains better-looking with age; a coated chain can't do that, and the finish only goes downhill from there.
Our copper chains are 100% pure copper — never coated — and copper is effectively a lifetime material. Where we use aluminum instead, we say so plainly: our matte black chains are powder-coated aluminum and our gray chains are aluminum, chosen because it can't rust, streak, or stain. What you never want is a chain pretending to be a metal it isn't.
Length and weight are the tells
Rain chain pricing can be deceptive, even from big-name retailers. A chain can be priced to sit in a quality class it doesn't belong to — shorter than it should be, made of less material, loosely designed. The quiet trend to watch: 6-foot chains sold as if they were full length. Unless your receptacle is unusually tall, a 6-foot chain comes up short.
